This is a very good book with code examples from real world. Is better to read first PHP 5 IN EASY STEPS or PHP FOR THE WEB.

Excellent book with lots of fully explained script examples that get you going quickly.
Just make sure your isp has support for mysqli extensions - mine did not.

First off, this book is part of the 'visual quick start guide' series and not the 'degree in php for advanced students'. So don't expect to have pages and pages of overly complicated text explaining every little detail (which most will agree is a good thing). It's purpose is to get you learning the code straight away with practical tutorials and doesn't spoon feed you every little bit of info.

Each chapter is split in to sections relating to specific topics such as the 'for' loop, functions, form validation, etc and typically follow a similar formula. You'll get a brief explanation of what the section is about, what you will learn and its uses. Then a numbered step-by-step tutorial of each block of code with an accompanying part showing how all the code should look together. Finally there's usually some tips along with any pictures, tables or notes relavent to the section.

There's some good chapters at the end showing how to use what you've learnt to create sites that are in common use; an e-commerce site being one of them.

Overall I'm really impressed and find these type of books suit my way of learning. After learning for a week I was already using the basic functions, like loops, includes, GET, etc, to create a detailed page with hardly any code compared to html.

I have found this book invaluable in learning PHP scripting and MySQL. It is extremely well written with lots of practicle exercises. The chapters on how to create real world applications was exactly what I was after. This book has been an excellent buy and my best buy in years.

Well written, gives easy and effective examples. Covers many aspects of PHP and SQL.
