After being adopted as the "web developer" for my company I though I should go back and learn some basics. I was surprised at how much I didn't know. I'd be writing HTML, PHP, Javascript and css for a while without really understanding everything I was doing. This book starts at the begining and shows you the complete basics and the theory behind it. I'm a lot more confident about what I'm doing now. The only way it falls behind is that it is slightly dated when it comes to ajax. Well recomended as a reference to anyone wanting to learn how to build websites.
This book contains a good foundation in everything you need to know to create advanced modern websites (far more than just HTML, XHTML and CSS!!!). The author carefully describes and defines the various languages that you need to develop advanced websites, leaving the reader with a clear understanding of exactly what each language should be used for. The following languages are covered:
HTML/XHTML
CSS
Javascript
PHP
MySQL
AJAX (not really a language, but very important nonetheless!)
The author has a wonderful sense of humour and makes the book very amusing and easy to read. He tells wonderfully geeky (and yet accessible) jokes the whole way through!
Those completely new to programming may find their progress with this book quite slow, but will easily learn everything they need to know. Those who are already familiar with basic programming concepts will fly through the chapters, picking up all of the essentials to each language, allowing them to dive straight into writing complex websites.
The author does keep the content fairly basic, and while readers will come away with a great understanding of each language, they may find that they need something more advanced to do really complicated stuff. Additional books on advanced PHP, Javascript, and soon HTML5/CSS3 would be of use to readers who want to go on to learn really complicated topics (but I would suggest learning the basics of each language from this book first, as it teaches a lot more than the other books that I have read in a very concise and easy to understand way).
Easily a 5 out of 5, and I will certainly look at for more Andy Harris books when I need to learn other languages!
Ideal - not only html/xhtml, but also insights into how the web works, and css, php and mysql coding. Perfect for the novice or intermediate designer.
Well in my opinion its not the best For Dummies book, its a great book very smart but it just lacks that For Dummies quality, another show off author , its ok thru xhtml and css bit but when it gets to more complicated java script and PHP bits its just no good. If your a begginer programer and i guess you are get "C for dummies" i know its C but trust me its a great book which explains coding in overall For Dummies style, gives you an overall idea about coding and all the bits and bobs that make you start to think like a programer.
Packed with tools, firefox addons and various utilities recommended in the lessons (all on disc), this book got me off to a great start. The only problem I found was at the end of the first book (HTML) it stopped giving the 'guided tutorials' and instead just proceeded to show me different things I could do without explaining exactly how.
The few examples it did display the code for, it did try to explain what the code meant but in my opinion, it jumped to quickly from the holding-your-hand-while-you-learn stage to the this-is-what-you-can-do-when-you-know-what-you're-doing stage almost instantly, leaving me feeling a bit lost, like i'm waiting for the next example to follow along to that never appears..
Overall, a fascinating read written in an informal, interesting style which is easy to read and understand, yet contains the essence of what you need to know, whilst providing many tips and software recommendations to work alongside the examples in the book.
If you are a quick study and are handy with a search engine to complement this book, it should set you up nicely...
