This book is fairly good. I imagine it's better though for people who haven't quite accepted that they have a debting problem nor have they begun to make any progress on reducing those debts. As I had already started doing those things before I picked up the book, it's practical tips and tricks weren't overly helpful for me as I had already started doing many of them. A lot of them are common sense. Most of the book is 'talk' about why we debt, the psychology, problems caused etc etc. Also, there are annoying paragraphs about 'Jane' or 'Mike' or 'Steve' who sorted their money out. But no reall step by step guides on how they achieved this. A lot is on the promise that it will 'all just work out'! The only main practical things it advises you do are - * Don't debt again, one day at a time. * Have a daily spending record, which you can then turn into weekly, and then monthly. * From this create a monthly spending plan INCLUDING things that most people in debt wouldn't let themselves have, like clothes, holiday fund etc. * Basically pay your debts off bit by bit. I, on the other hand, am in the progress of paying off my debts as quickly as possible, rather than bit by bit. I would rather make sacrafices now and have more expendible money in the near future, than have a little bit of expendible money now and debts carrying on for longer. Ultimately, that choice is yours. A good starter, but overall not many practical tips.

I read the book over a week and have started to put some of its suggestions into practice. Sound advice but you need discipline to follow it through. I will re-read it as there is a lot to take in, but I am certain the suggestions the author makes will lead to debt reduction if followed. If you have a debt problem I am sure this book will help you. The author puts the situation into perspective and offers hope in place of despair.

This book was written by an American for an American audience so some small sections (to do with bankcruptcy) aren't relevant to the British reader. Some parts are also a little dated (it was written around the time debit cards were being introduced) but aside from that it is an invaluable read.

It gives positive advice on how to get out of debt, looks into reasons why people go into debt in the first place (that was a real eye opener) whatever their personal income and how to change negative perceptions of your self and situation.

For the first time in a long time I felt positive and in control of my finances. I also felt a lot better about myself.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to change - it contains small and relatively easy steps that can make a long term difference.

I needed help and was ready to change my overspending ways. This is important becuase if you cant admit this to yourself nothing will help you, except maybe bankruptcy - which is so NOT a good idea. This book was exactly what I needed to back up my decision to take my financial position into my own hands. I knew how much I owed (27K) but I didnt know how I was going to sort it out. I have taken one star off because of the Americanisms, but other than that it was full of good advice and encouraging and not at all patronising or blaming. If you need £ help and you dont know where to start, this is a good book and well worth the money. I have recommended it to 2 of my friends who find themselves with too much month at the end of the money.

This is a simple way of looking at how to get on the road to a prosperous future. I'm just starting out with a mortgage to cope with. The techniques are helping me to furnish my house without compromising my lifestyle. I strongly recommend anyone who is starting out or who has trouble with tracing their money to get this book. A few pounds invested now will return a lot more in the future. Read, enjoy and prosper.
