A very depressed friend contacted me and said "If I had a bottle of pills, I'd take them all now." I told her to see her GP and read this book. If you suffer from serious depression or know someone who does, and you want to understand what they're going through, read this book. It's as gripping and entertaining as any novel and better written than most. Whilst she pulls no punches, Brampton's book carries a message of hope and is full of practical advice and inspiration (and I speak as a long-term sufferer who's never been able to get on with books by Dorothy Rowe.) Thank you, Sally Brampton, for your brilliant memoir. It will save lives.
This is a great read for anyone struggling with depression. What I personally liked is that it's a true account from a real person and it is very easy to identify with Sally. As it is not a clinical review from an 'expert' who studies the problem, you feel like you're not alone and that, I know is something truly helpful for depression sufferers. I would reccomend this book as an inspiration to anyone feeling alone and misunderstood in their battle against depression!
I do not warm to Sally Brampton. As a fashion journalist, her stock is the superficial and even before she suffered from depression, she was patently a tad self-absorbed. However, what she went through with depression is not something I would wish on anyone.
Yes, as the negative reviewer points out, for a serious guide to working your way through this illness, you should go to Dorothy Rowe; Brampton's advice (walking, yoga) is pretty standard stuff. For a well-written observation of its effects on one person, you could equally well start here. There really is no way for even a close friend to begin dealing with a severely depressed person in the state Brampton was for years on end, but at least it might give you an insight into what not to do.
In her odd 'up' moments, I even found myself happy for Brampton as she raises the energy and will to name drop the designers of the favourite clothes she can at last bring herself to wear. And that, seriously, is saying something.
Sally Brampton deserves the highest praise for her honesty and her ability to describe in simple language a very challenging and complex experience. In fact, starting the book was such a powerful experience for ME that I could initially only read a few pages at a time because Sally Brampton's writing took me straight back to the darkest days of my own experience with major depression.
This should be compulsory reading for anyone who still thinks of someone suffering from depression as just feeling blue and needing a kick up the backside.
I don't suffer from depression but know a few people who do. Until I read Sally's book I had no idea what they were going through. I felt very frightened when I read the book - it was worse than reading a horror story because it was true. I am full of admiration for Sally, who has been through hell and back, and for others who suffer from depression and alcoholism. I think I understand more and am grateful that I am not similarly afflicted. An incredibly honest and well written book. It will make you appreciate your good health if you are not prone to depression and hopefully make you feel less alone if you are.
