I got this book and one other recommended trading book. Id not started spreadbetting before getting this book and although I have some knowledge I didn't feel comfortable taking the steps forward. I found this book very easy to read and understand. It takes you through all the basics such as opening an account, what companies are available, what the various terminology means and a few strategies which would give you food for thought to develope your own trading strategy. It also has a list of numerous other recommended reading material to help take your learning further. It has given me confidence and Im now in the process of conducting my own research into what spread betting platform to use and have even started to develope a trading strategy. I will be looking to read another book from its recommended reading section but I feel the way this book is written has given me confidence and direction to get started in spreadbetting. Very good book for the price but probably a bit basic of anyone who has been trading for some time
I bought The Financial Spreadbetting Handbook primarily because I was looking for better ways to trade the markets. Unfortunately having read the book I was disappointed. I found nothing more than the usual references to technical analysis indicators which I know to be generally unreliable and inconsistent. I think a complete beginner would benefit from the information within the book as decent advice and recommendations are made to getting started with accounts etc....
Even then I would not recommend for any complete beginner to be following any strategy within the book as the ADX indicator is not ideal, if taken in isolation from other more consistent techniques. If you are looking for a strategy for making consistent profits from betting on the markets then I would recommend you keep looking.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is planning on starting spread betting. Malcolm Pryor writes in an easy to follow style without being patronising or verbose. He covers everything that a novice needs to know in order to make the decision about whether spread betting is going to be for them. He offers practical advice with an emphasis on risk management and suggests some trading strategies which are simple to understand. I liked the way he continually refers to the characteristics of a successful spread better compared to those of someone who isn't. For this reason I would also recommend this book for someone who has been trading for a while but would like to improve their win ratio. Having read this book a couple of times now, I feel I can start spread betting pretty confident that I'm not going to lose my money quickly! When I've got some practical experience I would then turn to other books about charting techniques and trading psychology, but as a starter handbook this is very good value.
Good read, all the info you need but a little boring at times. But hey not the most exciting subject matter in the world!
Malcolm Pryor's handbook would work well for those who know absolutely nothing about spread betting and technical analysis, and want a primer on the basics. It's short and simple enough to finish in a single sitting. However, many points are presented 'as is', with no explanation of the background or reasoning behind them. "This is a useful indicator." Yes Malcolm, but why? Why would I choose to use it over another indicator? Can it be used in conjunction with other indicators, and what would that combination mean?
I get the feeling that this book is simply an expanded set of Powerpoint slides from a training course; and that the author has found a strategy which works for him, but is not able to compare and crontrast that with other potential strategies. The information provided is therefore a very shallow skim across the surface of what is, admittedly, a complex field of knowledge.
Overall it's fine as a very first primer, but anyone who is serious about learning spread betting and technical analysis will grow out of this book very very quickly, as I did.
